A suspect is in custody and facing charges, with authorities saying he opened fire on Akron Police.

Police responding Sunday night to a call for a welfare check on Grant Street heard gunfire coming from a location on East Sherman Street and went to that area.

Reports say that as they exited their patrol vehicle, 45-year-old Calvin Hunt ran out of an apartment and opened fire on the officers, who responded in kind.

A woman was found shot inside the apartment building, with police saying they believe she had been involved in some sort of domestic issue between Hunt and another man who was later taken into custody.

Hunt was arrested Monday on three counts of felonious assault.
