A massive explosion on Sunday (April 13) in northwest Austin leveled a two-story house, leaving six people injured, including two critically. The blast, which occurred on Double Spur Loop, was felt miles away, damaging at least 23 other homes in the area.
According to the Austin Fire Department (AFD), the explosion caused one house to completely collapse, while a neighboring house suffered severe damage. Among the injured were two firefighters who sustained minor injuries. Three individuals were extricated from the debris, with one requiring an extended rescue effort. Two people from the primary residence were found in critical condition, while another from the adjacent house was in serious but stable condition.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown, but initial reports of a plane crash have been ruled out. The home was not connected to Texas Gas Service lines, but it did have a propane tank, according to fire officials. The explosion's impact shattered windows and doors in nearby homes and even affected the Laurel Mountain Elementary School, where windows were broken.
As reported by KXAN, Texas Gas Service crews responded to the incident, confirming the absence of natural gas services in the home. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing, and power has been restored to all but the most severely damaged homes.
