LaRose Industries has issued a recall for over 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry-making kits due to a violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. The recall was announced after it was discovered that the kits contain a resin with a hazardous amount of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), which can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation when in liquid form.
The recall affects ten models of the Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem kits and one refill pack. These kits include a resin bottle and a UV setting light, and they were sold at major retailers like Target, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and Joann, as well as online at Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Joann, from January 2023 through September 2024. The kits were priced between $13 and $36.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the resin poses a hazard only if it is not fully cured, meaning any liquid residue remains. In such cases, the jewelry should not be worn and should be kept away from children. LaRose Industries has reported no injuries related to this issue. Customers are advised to stop using the kits immediately and contact LaRose for a full refund.
For more information, consumers can contact LaRose Industries toll-free at 888-770-7029 or visit their website. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has also provided details on the recall and encourages anyone with affected products to seek a remedy.
