Handlers at the Akron Zoo are sharing news of the passing of a female tufted deer.
The deer named Ellie was born at the Prospect Zoo in New York in July of 2019 and was transferred to the Akron Zoo in 2021.
She recently passed of age-related issues at thirteen years and seven months old -- more than three years longer than the median life expectancy for female tufted deer.
Keepers say they will work within the Tufted Deer Species Survival Plan to bring another female tufted deer to the Akron Zoo.
