Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is falling under criticism for canceling weekend events scheduled to take place on city-owned property including Juneteenth events and the Greater Akron Heart Walk.
The cancellations were announced Friday night after the mayor said he received a letter signed by eight city council members who expressed concerns about the possibility of more violence following this month's mass shooting in the city.
A follow-up statement from the council members says they did not ask the mayor to cancel all large gatherings on city-owned property.
Mayor Malik says his team is working to reschedule all events that were canceled.
