Dana Point, California, couple Doug and Nancy Elliott were on vacation in Kaanapali, near the fire-stricken city of Lahaina, Maui, when they encountered Dominic Landolfi at the resort where they were staying. The 83-year-old retired insurance agent and Air Force veteran lives on the 10th floor of the building, but the wildfires caused a power outage, so he couldn’t take the elevator.
The Elliotts soon realized that Landolfi is in the early stages of dementia and with cell service also down in the area, they knew someone would probably be worried about him, so they took him under their wing. "For three days, Dom was kind of our focus,” Nancy says, “We wanted to make sure he was taken care of.”
Once cell service resumed, the Elliotts were able to make contact with Landolfi’s daughter, Vickie Avetisian, who lives on Kauai and had been in a panic over not being able to contact her father. "The Elliotts were incredible," Avetisian says, “They told me I didn't have to worry, that they were going to take care of him no matter what." She was able to book a flight for her father to Kauai and the Elliotts made sure he made it to the plane. When he landed, Avetisian sent a picture of her with her dad to the Elliotts. "Seeing the picture of him with his family,” Nancy recalls, “Just made it all just so incredibly worth it.”
