Crossing Guard, 88, Dies While Saving Two Young Children

An 88-year-old crossing guard from Kansas City, Kansas, is being hailed as a hero after he died while saving two young kids trying to cross the street. It was just before 8 a.m. when Bob Nill noticed a car was speeding toward the crosswalk near Christ The King Catholic School.

Nill was standing in the road with his red stop sign as a seven-year-old and an 11-year-old started to cross the street. When he realized the black sedan was not going to stop, he turned to the kids and told them to stop walking as he moved to push them out of the way.

"He had the stop sign in one hand, and he yelled stop," the school's principal, Cathy Fithian, told 41 Action News. "The boys listened, and they weren't struck because he saved their lives."

While the driver missed the kids, Nill was hit by the car and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"He saved two of our students today," Fithian said. "I'm confident they would not be here if (he) had not stepped in, and we are thankful, we feel very blessed to have had him in our lives for five years. We just pray for his family at this time."

The driver was also taken to the hospital and is cooperating with the investigation. Officials did not provide any information about the driver's condition or the cause of the crash.
