Officer Shoots Armed Student At Wisconsin High School

AnĀ armed student was shot by a police officerĀ at Waukesha South High School in Wisconsin on Monday (December 2). Another student told a school resource officer that their classmate was armed, and authorities confronted the 17-year-old hoping to de-escalate the situation.

The school was placed on lockdown asĀ the resource officer isolated the student inside a classroom.

Waukesha police and sheriffā€™s deputies joined the officer, and they tried to talk to the young suspect.Ā

ā€œThe suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officersā€™ commands,ā€Ā Waukesha Police ChiefĀ Russell JackĀ said. ā€œThe suspect removed his handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers."

One of the officers opened fire, striking the teen. The officers performed life-saving medical care on the young man, and he was taken to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.Ā

Officials did not say why the teen brought a gun to school or what charges he will face.

ā€œMy heart is with the students, educators, and staff of Waukesha South High School and the entire Waukesha community as they mourn and endure the trauma of todayā€™s shooting. I am grateful for our educators and first responders who worked quickly to keep our kids safe and ensure no one else was injured," Wisconsin GovernorĀ Tony EversĀ said in a statement.
