Familiar Voice to Broadcast Massillon Tiger Championship game

Sam Bourquin broadcasts the Massillon Tigers Akron Hoban game on November 22, 2019.

(Canton-OH) When the Massillon Tigers take the field at Tom Benson Hall of Fame stadium to play for a Division II State Championship Thursday night, a familiar voice will be calling the action on radio.

Sam Bourquin will be behind the microphone on 99.7 FM in the second season of a joint venture between iHeartMedia and The Canton Repository. The broadcast is also available on the fridaynightohio.com and iHeartRadio apps.

For the past 16 weeks Bourquin has led a team of skilled and knowledgeable broadcasters including color analyst Jeff Shreve and sideline reporter, Todd Porter.

For Bourquin, who was unceremoniously dumped from WHBC-AM in 2014, and now hosts a show on Akron's 1590 WAKR-AM, the thrill of calling another State Championship game for a Stark County team is an honor, and one he calls a team effort. “We all enjoy being together in the booth because we’re fans first.” “All three of us take pride in preparing a quality broadcast and we hope it shows,” he said. “The team gathers together two to three times a week to make sure we have our bases covered for Friday nights,” he added.

“There is nobody better than Sam and the team” said Keith Kennedy, Area Senior Vice President of Programming for iHeartMedia. “It’s rewarding to see the passionate audience gravitate to seasoned pros on the quality broadcast that we produce each week.”

Kennedy also commented on the heritage Bourquin brings, “There are three names synonymous with broadcasting High School Football in Stark County, Muzzy, Johnson and Bourquin. Friday nights in the fall aren’t the same without Sam on the radio,” he said.
