Nearly 2% of America's high school students identify as transgender, according to a survey released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The shocking number from the study, however, is that more than a third of them have tried to kill themselves in the past year. The CDC study mirrors findings from smaller studies that show transgender students face bullying and have higher rates of drug use and suicidal thoughts than their peers. The study included more than 130,000 students in ten states. It is the first time the CDC has asked students about transgender issues.
