Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is responding to recent reports of immigration raids around the country and attempts to clamp down on diversity and inclusion efforts.
The mayor released a statement on Wednesday saying in part that the City of Akron remains steadfast in a commitment to public service and treating everyone with dignity and respect.
He says that Akron will continue to be a welcoming community that values and supports immigrants and refugees, the LGBTQ+ community, and any group that is being unfairly targeted.
Malik adds that Akron's diverse community will continue to be a source of strength, not a point of weakness to be exploited or bullied.
