This past weekend, 16-year-old Jamichal Young made a surprising discovery when he stepped outside of his family’s Fort Lauderdale home: someone had left a 21-month-old baby strapped into a car seat at the end of their driveway. “I just walked out of the house, and then, I saw a baby in the road,” Young recalls.
The teen promptly called 911 and, with the help of his family, cared for the boy by changing his wet diaper and giving him some juice. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived moments later and informed the Youngs that the child had been left by someone who’d stolen a car just a few blocks away with the baby inside.
Soon afterward, the toddler’s mother arrived. “As she came here, she was crying,” Young says. The teen is grateful that he found the baby when he did, remarking on how hot it was out that day. He believes they owe their good fortune to a higher power, and says, “If it wasn’t for God, I would have never been here.”
